Vintage Feedsack Gathered Apron

I was fortunate enough recently to acquire seven authentic feedsacks, and this is the first of the aprons I made. Feedsacks are truly an important part of Americana, having been popular when times were tough in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Women sent their husbands to the store with very specific instructions on WHICH brand of flour or feed to buy, depending on what company offered the prettiest sacks. Great advertising gimmick on the part of the producers, don’t you think? There are many good websites regarding the history of feedsacks in America and I hope you will take a few minutes to look at some of them.

This is a little vintage style half apron trimmed in red and white checks. I lined the pocket in the feedsack fabric, turned in down and added a vintage early plastic red petal shaped button - perfect for this very old feedsack! The large ties are also lined so you can have either the feedsack fabric showing or the checks. It’s adorable either way. The seams are all bound and the ties are reinforced, as shown in one of the detail pictures. This is such a sweet little apron, and I will offer more in the near future. Because of the age of the feedsack, I recommend a gentle wash cycle.
