Very Shabby Tote of Many Colors

My favorite singer/story teller of all times is Dolly Parton, and I particularly love her autobiographical song “Coat of Many Colors”. I made this very roomy handbag with her in mind. I used scraps of all my favorite fabrics and randomly quilted them together for the front of this bag. The straps are also quilted and have a ragged edge which I think gives the entire project a very authentic homespun look. Taking it one step further, I added reclaimed rick rack, cotton lace, and vintage buttons for accent. The large outer pocket on the back is strip quilted and finished off with a very delicate pink lace.  There are two very large pockets inside: one is patch-worked and trimmed in lace, and divided for cell phone, sun glasses, I Phone, etc; the other is strip quilted and is also divided with one large section and the other for keys, water bottle, etc.  All seams and straps are heavily reinforced and the pockets are double stitched and lined with fusible fleece for stability. This beautiful and one of a kind handbag is 19” across, stands 12” high, and has a 5” base. The straps have a 12” drop.
